How To Become A Medical Cannabis Caregiver

As of May 6, 2026, getting a caregiver card for a Medical Cannabis Patient just became a whole lot easier.

Medical cannabis caregivers and guardians no longer have to undergo a background check. Instead, they must attest they’ve never violated the requirements of DHHS medical cannabis statute, been convicted of a felony within the past 10 years, or been convicted of a misdemeanor for drug distribution after December 10, 2018. Below are the steps to becoming a caregiver. If you need additional help, please come to a Beehive Farmacy location, and we can walk you through the steps.

  1. A medical cannabis patient must request you as a caregiver in their electronic verification system (EVS) account.
    • You’ll get an email from the EVS when a patient requests you as their caregiver.
  2. Go to the EVS
    • Click the “Log In” button on the EVS.
    • You’ll sign in to UtahID before creating an EVS account.
    • New users: Follow the steps at UtahID to create your UtahID account.
  3. Create an account in the EVS.
    • Look at the pictures under the “Visual Help” heading to see how to create an account in the EVS.
  4. Complete the caregiver request by submitting a caregiver application in the EVS.
  5. Download your medical cannabis caregiver card from the EVS. You can print or save your card to your device.
    • You must show your card and a valid ID each time you go to a medical cannabis pharmacy.
  6. Buy medical cannabis after the patient has met with a medical cannabis pharmacist.
    • You can buy medical cannabis after the patient has met with a medical cannabis pharmacist. You can buy cannabis from any Utah medical cannabis pharmacy.
