Our mission at BeehiveMed is to help eligible patients obtain Utah medical cannabis cards. It is a pretty straightforward process once you understand how it all works. But did you know that there are different types of cards in Utah? The type of card you get depends on your needs.
The most common card is the Patient card. It is the card you would apply for if you wanted to purchase medical cannabis for yourself. Here are the other card types available in the Beehive State:
- Minor Patient – This card is available to minors granted approval by the Compassionate Use Board to use medical cannabis.
- Guardian – The Guardian card is issued to the guardians of minor patients.
- Caregiver – A card issued to the caregiver of a patient with an active Patient card.
- Non-Utah Resident – A card issued to an out-of-state visitor approved to use medical cannabis in their state of residence.
Both the Guardian and Caregiver cards only allow those who hold them to purchase medical cannabis on behalf of someone else. Neither card gives the holder the legal right to use the products bought at a medical cannabis dispensary. If a caregiver or guardian wants to use medical cannabis themself, they must apply for a separate Patient card.
More About the Patient Card
To get a Patient card in Utah, you must be a legal adult diagnosed with one of the conditions on the state’s qualifying conditions list. That list includes chronic pain, acute pain, PTSD, cancer, persistent nausea, certain seizure disorders, and several other conditions.
Most current medical cannabis users in Utah qualify because of chronic pain. Over 88,000 of the 103,000 users registered with the state as of July 2025 are chronic pain patients. The second most common condition listed on cardholder applications is PTSD at just over 6,000.
Everything Is Done Electronically
You might be interested to know that everything involved with applying for a medical cannabis card, with the exception of actually seeing a medical provider, is done electronically. The state maintains an electronic verification system (EVS) through which patients apply for their cards, make payments, and renew. Medical providers also use the system to make their official medical cannabis recommendations.
In order to apply, you need a UtahID. The information from that account is used to log in to the EVS, register, and apply for a medical cannabis card.
The EVS keeps track of important data relating to a patient’s card and medical cannabis purchases. Medical cannabis pharmacies are required to verify a patient’s card through the EVS before filling an order. As a patient, you would either print your card on paper or carry it digitally on your phone whenever you visited the pharmacy.
Easy and Affordable
All of us may sound like a lot if you are new to medical cannabis in Utah. But don’t worry. The process of obtaining a card is pretty easy. Not only that, but we are here to help. You will also be happy to know that it is very affordable.
The annual fee is just $8. Whether you are obtaining your first card or renewing, the fee is very budget-friendly. You will likely spend more for your medical exam than the cost of the card.
