What Are the Changes for Patients in the New EVS?

While the launch of the new electronic verification system (EVS) did not go as smoothly as the state would have liked, most of the news regarding the upgraded system is good. For example, the new system benefits patients in a number of ways. Let us talk about them.

Note that the EVS is essentially the medical cannabis portal in Utah. Patients, healthcare providers, pharma teams, and regulators all use the system in various ways. So it is in the state’s best interests to constantly look for ways to make it better.

The new EVS launched on August 11-12, 2024. Here are the changes from the patient’s perspective:

1. Mobile Access

If we had to choose one of the changes as being most important to patients, it would probably be mobile access. Up until the new system launched, it was nearly impossible to access the EVS with a smartphone or tablet. Those issues are now a thing of the past. Mobile access has been implemented.

That means you can use your mobile device if you prefer it over a computer. And if you do not have a computer, you no longer need to go to the library or use a friend’s machine. You can go to the EVS with your phone or tablet.

2. Medical Cannabis Cards

Previously, the state would email patients their new medical cannabis cards upon approval. Renewals were also sent via email. That is no more. With the new EVS, patients access their medical cannabis cards through their accounts.

The 15-day review period has not changed. If you submit a brand-new application for a card, it will be reviewed within 15 business days. Upon approval, the card will automatically be added to your account. You will not get the card attached to an email. So whether you are applying for the first time or renewing, be sure to keep an eye on your account through the first 15 days.

You can still choose to print the card on paper or carry it with you on a mobile device. You will still be required to present your card whenever you visit Beehive Farmacy, or any other pharmacy in the state.

3. Monthly Purchase Limits

State law limits the amount of medical cannabis a patient can purchase month-to-month. Patients are only allowed a 30-day supply per visit. In addition, they can only possess up to that same amount at any time. With the new EVS, keeping track of purchase limits is easy.

Each patient’s purchase limit is included in their account. If you ever want to know where you stand, just log in and check your records. You can compare your purchase limits with what you still have on hand for the purposes of gauging future purchases.

4. Medical Provider Assistance

Finally, the new EVS makes it easier for medical providers to assist patients as they apply and pay for their cards. Patients looking to apply but uncomfortable about doing it themselves can ask their medical providers for help. Medical providers are not required to assist, but they can and probably would in order to support patients.

Admittedly, rollout of the new EVS was marred by a few hiccups. But it appears as though the state has addressed those things. Now that the new EVS is up and running, things should be easier for patients, healthcare providers, and pharmacies alike.

In closing, remember to bring your medical cannabis card when you visit Beehive Farmacy. We have locations in both Salt Lake City and Brigham City, fully stocked with the medicines you need.
