Among the many changes enacted in Utah following the 2025 legislative session is a provision that allows medical cannabis patients to bring opaque bags with them to the pharmacy. The idea is for patients to transport their medical cannabis products home inside this bag. Bringing your own bag to the pharmacy is a good idea. This post will explain why.
Remember that all medical cannabis products in Utah must be purchased from a licensed medical cannabis pharmacy, like Beehive Farmacy. Our two locations, in Salt Lake City and Brigham City, are here to ensure you have access to the medicines you need. With that, let us talk about the opaque bag.
Taking Your Medicines Home
State law requires that medical cannabis patients transport their medicines in an opaque bag or box. The pharmacy or the patient can provide the bag or box. Its use is mandated whenever transporting medical cannabis products or supplies through public spaces.
The law is ostensibly designed to ensure privacy, support cardholder discretion, and prevent any unintended consequences related to the ongoing stigma of using cannabis. There may be some element of public safety to it as well. At any rate, medical cannabis products must be concealed from view whenever being transported in public spaces.
The Practical Requirements
Utah’s rules regarding packaging and transport are pretty easy to understand. From a practical standpoint, there are just three things to pay attention to:
- Original Containers – When leaving the medical cannabis pharmacy, all cannabis medicines must be in their original labeled containers. Those containers are then placed inside an opaque bag or box.
- Public Spaces – The requirement for the opaque bag or box isn’t limited to the period of time immediately following purchase. The opaque bag or box is required whenever medical cannabis is transported in public spaces.
- Patient Bags – With the 2025 change now in force, patients can bring their own bags or boxes. Doing so is similar to bringing one’s own bags to the grocery store.
Failure to comply with the product concealment rules could result in fines against a patient. Escalated penalties are built into the law as well. Patients are advised to never take any chances with their medicines.
Help Us Preserve Bags
Finally, we get to the question of why bringing your own bag or box to the pharmacy is a good idea. In short, it helps us preserve bags. The fewer opaque bags we distribute to customers, the less those bags are contributing to the waste stream. It is a sustainability thing.
Single-use bags are not the greatest packaging option for sustainability purposes. It’s best that we keep as many as possible out of our landfills. So if we provide a bag at either our Salt Lake City or Brigham City locations, don’t throw it away. Bring it with you on your next visit to Beehive Farmacy.
Also note that your bag doesn’t have to be plastic. You can transport your medicines in a backpack, purse, shoulder bag, etc. You can even bring a cardboard box if that’s your thing. The only point being made here is that you can help us be a more sustainable business by bringing your own bag or box with you.
If you ever have questions about transporting your medicines, do not be afraid to ask our knowledgeable staff. We will do whatever we can to ensure you understand your responsibilities under the law. And of course, we will continue dispensing opaque bags to those customers who do not bring their own to the pharmacy.
